We took a few days to drive down the southern half of the Oregon coast, and while one might be inclined to write about the life-changingly transcendent experience that was supposed to have been, it was a pleasant road trip along Highway 101 with stops at viewpoints, cafes, thrift and antique shops, and more than a few moments of being able to appreciate the places where ocean meets land.

A splash of early autumn literally hit us in the form of gray skies and rain on the morning we visited the Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint in Bandon, a town apparently renowned for its golf courses (and soon also for a sprawling luxury resort whenever the developers get their go-ahead).

The muting mist wrapped the beach and its monumental outcroppings in a shifting gray gauze that kept out the sun and other beachgoers, and we were gifted a sense of reset, a subtle relabeling of an equilibrium that lasted probably as long as the next few miles on the road, but was as welcome as it was unexpected.
