On a Particular Theme

about

To make a terribly long and rambling story short*, we got to participate in a number of "virtual open mic" events that our friends in the UK organized over the past ten months or so.

Because of the pandemic lockdown restrictions, what used to be a night at the pub opened its doors to the world and thus gave us the opportunity to pick a tune that fit the event's theme, learn it, record it, and even make a video to be presented to the attendees via YouTube and Facebook.

While we weren't able to get things in gear to submit a tune for every one of these open mic nights, we did manage a few songs that are collected here. In reverse chronological order:

"I'm Only Asking" was written and originally performed by Barbara Manning and her 28th Day band. The particular theme that nudged us to this song was "doing it," or a tune with a "present participle in the title."

"Head Hang Low" is one of our favorite Julian Cope songs, originally released on his 'Fried' LP, and was submitted for the "Body Talk" theme involving titles that contain a part of the body.

"San Diego Zoo" was our pick for a song "with the name of a town/city/state or country in the title" for the "town & country" event. It was written by the inimitable Stephin Merrit and recorded as The 6ths with the lovely Barbara Manning on vocals.

YouTube links to the videos can be found on the individual song pages. As they were created by folks with absolutely minimal experience producing videos (i.e., us), we thank you in advance for your forbearance and indulgence. Wanda the Dog also deserves apologies and chicken McNuggets for her involvement in these proceedings.

We'd started work on "Dog & Butterfly" by Heart for the animals-themed open mic, but didn't get around to finishing it for the submission deadline. It's my understanding that the next event's theme is songs with the word "love" in the title, so perhaps we might have a go at "Love Removal Machine." Or not.

* Well that didn't go as intended, did it?
